About Prof. Weale

Prof. Weale has over 40 years’ experience cutting across all forms of energy. He is Professor of Energy Economics at the Centre for Environmental Management, Resources and Energy at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. His recent previous positions were:

  • Chief Economist RWE AG, Germany’s largest power producer (2007-16)
  • Senior Advisor to Energy Transitions Commission (2017-18)
  • Director of European Energy Services, Global Insight (now incorporated in Standard & Poors) (2000-2007)

Beforehand he was Director of European Services for Global Insight (now CERA IHS Markit), one of the world’s leading energy and economic consultancies. At Global Insight he covered all forms of energy and was frequently engaged as an Expert Witness at high-profile gas contract arbitrations. He began his energy career with ExxonMobil in supply and refining. He has a Physics degree from Oxford University, an M.Sc in Systems Engineering and an MBA.

With his comprehensive understanding of economics, policy and technology he is able to offer penetrating insights into energy developments and brings a healthy reality check to ambitious goals set by governments. He is heavily in demand as a guest speaker where clients appreciate his ability to think out of the box and challenge conventional wisdom. He is also regularly engaged as an expert witness in arbitration proceedings.

Prof. Weale lives and works in the industrial Ruhr area of Germany and is strongly connected with both power companies and the energy-intensive industry through membership of VIK (German association for Energy Intensive Industries). He is fluent in both English and German, and travels as required within and outside Europe.

Experience

Over 40 years’ Experience of Energy Markets

Between 2007 and 2016 Weale was Chief Economist at RWE AG, Germany’s largest power generator and helped navigate the company through the German Energiewende. He therefore has extensive insight into the operations, challenges and political pressures on large European power companies operating a range of power plants in different countries.

Beforehand he was Director of European Services for Global Insight (now CERA IHS Markit), one of the world’s leading energy and economic consultancies. At Global Insight he covered all forms of energy and was frequently engaged as an Expert Witness at high-profile gas contract arbitrations.
